Week Summary

This is Holy Week — the axis of the entire liturgical year. The Church does not merely remember the Passion; she enters it. Monday through Wednesday build tension through the Servant Songs of Isaias and the full Passion narratives of Mark and Luke. Then the sacred Triduum begins Thursday evening: the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, the agony in Gethsemane, the trial, the Cross, the tomb, and finally the explosion of light at the Easter Vigil. For Iron & Incense, this week is rich territory. The 1962 rite preserves elements the post-conciliar reform altered significantly: the black vestments of Good Friday, the solemn Reproaches (Improperia) during the Adoration of the Cross, the Exsultet chanted by the deacon over the Paschal Candle, and the ancient prophecies of the Vigil. These are not antiquarian curiosities — they are the lived prayer of the Roman Church for centuries, carrying a theological weight that rewards careful attention.
